The 2, 376-passenger Norwegian Jewel (the namesake of the line's Jewel-class ships) has been cruising since 2005. Maintaining a low 1-to-2 crew-to-guest ratio, the ship offers more tailored experiences than you’d find on its 4, 000-passenger megaship siblings. Plus, every guest has plenty of elbow room thanks to the ship's myriad of restaurants and lounges: In total, there are 16 different eateries and 13 bars and nightclubs, several of which — including O'Sheehan's Neighborhood Bar & Grill and Carlo's Bake Shop — debuted in May 2014. While Jewel appeals to a variety of traveler types, it's especially well-suited for families with age-appropriate kids clubs, a video arcade and waterslides. But there are plenty of diversions to keep grown-ups occupied as well thanks to a full-service spa, a casino and sports facilities. As for lodging, compared to other Norwegian vessels staterooms are smaller than the norm: Starting at 138 square feet, Inside cabins are a tight fit for families. Those traveling with kids are better off upgrading to a suite, which provides 272 to 578 square feet of space (including a private balcony). According to some recent passengers, the only drawback aboard this ship was the noise level. The seemingly constant stream of music was a prime source of frustration for some passengers. That said, many past guests praise the ship's courteous staff and kid-friendly facilities.
